I have found that no matter how many expensive cat scratching posts I get, the tried and true is the least expensive cardboad such as in the picture above here. As you can see it's been happily mutilated!
Another fancy and stylish option is softpaws. http://www.softpaws.com/
A very simple method is to clip the nails. My own cats even enjoy an emory board.
A person told me once and I have since passed it on, if you don't want a dog to act like a dog, don't get a dog. If you don't want a cat to act like a cat, then don't get a cat. It's understandable that you don't want your cat scratching up your furniture, but the bottom line is that their claws serve a purpose and they are very integral to who they are and there are other alternatives.
Removing claws does NOT prevent your cat from wanting to go outside but rather puts them in danger should they escape to outside as they will have no way to defend themselves. Spay/Neuter has more of an effect on whether or not your cat will want to roam outside because if you don't do this, he or she will want to mate. Spay/Neuter takes this desire away and the need for going out is lessened greatly.
